Hello, Autumn. It’s me. Good to see you back again.

After the crippling heat your jerk sister Summer dropped on us, you’re a refreshing return visitor. No, I mean it. And your hair is starting to look lovely. A few more weeks and it will be beyond fantastic, your annual dyejob of oranges and reds. I’ve missed you. Really.

Winter will be here before too long and that’s okay…I like her, too. But you really are my favorite. You always have been and always will be. I love you, Autumn.

I know, I know…it’s a strong, rash thing to say. But I mean it. Your chilling breezes, the smell of your nighttimes. There’s nothing about you I would change. You’re the perfect season.

The perfect season.

So tired...

I'm incredibly tired today and I'm not exactly sure why. The night before last, I was up until around 4:30 AM, but I didn't spend yesterday in nearly as much of a haze as today. It's the kind of tired where I'm sitting here at my desk staring at my monitor as if I've never seen anything like it before and have no idea what to do with it. Blinking even seems dangerous because I feel like if I hold my eyes shut even half a second too long, I'll collapse onto my desk into an immediate deep sleep. Coffee seems the obvious answer, but there's none made here and I lack the energy to even brew any.

I have a grand wrap-up planned to my current story over at The Kenmore, so I guess I could be working on the script for that. But it involves creative use of words and I don't know if I have it in me. Congealing my scattered thoughts into a coherent post is difficult enough.

b

A Strange Visitation

Over the last few weeks, I've found myself visited by a particular dragonfly, most often when I leave for work in the morning. Generally, this dragonfly will fly around the door, hover around me for a moment, follow me a ways to my car, and then fly away. A few days ago, it sat on the railing down my steps and I was able to get a good look at it. It's a beautiful light green with black tiger stripes, large inquisitive green eyes, and a long raggedy tail. This guy's pretty big.

This morning as I left for work, the dragonfly was waiting for me on the railing again. I said, "Hullo, dragonfly." It flew off the railing and landed on the cap of the water bottle I was holding, taking me in with its bulbous eyes. I smiled at its directness and it actually tilted its head, as if to say, "And what's so funny, then?"

The dragonfly rode on my water bottle all the way to my car, watching me the whole way, and then took off before I got my keys out.

It was a visitation. I'm not exactly sure by who or why, but I have some ideas...

b

A Work Chronicle

For tonight, I'm going to keep track of the loads of work I have to do in this to-be-updated entry. I have a lot of things to get done, so let's see how it goes.

9:51 - I'm just sitting down to start working (almost an hour later than usual) and I'm going to start by coloring my entry in for the Webcomic Hurricane Relief Telethon. I penciled, lettered and inked it last night, so hopefully the color stage won't take too long. Scanning now...

10:04 - My computer decided not to recognize my Wacom tablet, so I had to reboot. Good sign this early in, huh? Meh. It's typical. While I was waiting for the computer to reboot, I ruled the blank page for the Quantum page I have to do tonight. Back to color!

10:50 - I just finished the flats (areas of solid color before any shading is added) on the webathon piece and I'm moving on to shading! Woo!

11:24 - Shading's done! Strip is done. I'm uploading it now and getting ready to send a copy to Brad, who's running the webathon. Quick break, then it's time to work on Quantum!

11:40 - Break time is OVER. I think I'm going to work on The Kenmore first, interspersed with bits of Quantum. That makes more sense. I'll pencil both, then keep going.

12:24 - So I decided to just go full steam on Quantum. I'm about halfway done inking it...didn't update this sooner as I got distracted. Go Quantum, go!

12:36 - Quantum inks done! And they're crap! Oh well. Going to pencil The Kenmore now while the ink dries. Actually, I have to write it and layout it out first. So, yeah. I'm gonna do that.

2:40 - Oh dear, you're still here...I've given up on the updates. Distracted, etc. Yes. So, well, thanks for reading. Nite.

b

Why I do this...

I love being a cartoonist. It's a great rush, a fantastic, frustrating ability to have. Because I don't have a lot of discipline or training, I find myself falling back on hackneyed, stolen trick for making things look right. I think if I took a year off of producing comics to learn how to really draw, I'd be the king of the world.

Joe, you could be the king now...you just need to realize it.

So it's nearly 2:00 AM and I've only just lettered today's The Kenmore strip. For those who don't know the process, I write, pencil, letter, ink, scan, tone, upload. I've got quite a bit further to go. It could be worse...I could still be penciling. That doesn't help much.

I'm sort of tired, but I'm sort of encouraged to stay up for a little while longer anyway. Second wind hit me earlier, so I'll see if working this late pays off.

b
